#EnoughisEnough# From Social media to the streets: Hundreds march against rape and sexual violence.

Protestors in Lagos, Abuja and Benin Nigeria, took to the streets to declare public unrest and
injustice after a series of high profile rape cases shook the nation. Following the spark of
digital protests on social media, petitions and action discussions on news networks like
Channels Tv and NTA, individuals young, old, male and female decided to take the voices
farther. More than 200 protesters marched around police headquarters in Abuja, chanting
slogans and holding banners that read; 'Justice for all Nigerian girls and women; No means no.

In Lagos state reports claim that no less than 500 individuals went on the march
in partnerships with Non-Governmental agencies to protest against the raping, killing and
brutality against women, including the police force as perpetrators of violent crimes.
The commissioner of police in Lagos state Oqua Effiong Etim addressed the protesters
pleading with them to report cases and ensure them that the best would be done concerning
the violent crimes. In attendance, celebrities, human rights activists, lawyers and journalists
all joined the march around the police headquarters in Lagos. Lawyer and human rights
advocate, Oluwaseun Oshowobi grieved over the amounts of rape cases she has had to endure
throughout her career as a lawyer. The lawyer openly condemned family settlements and out
of court hearings for rape offenders. “Life without parole” could be heard in the background
as she spoke to a reporter for THENATION.ng.

The protests across the country were organised by various organisations such as; Womens’
Rights and Health project, NECA’S Network of Entrepreneurial Women, Vivian Bassey of
Action Aid are also pushing for life parole without parole for perpetrators of rape. Dorothy
Njemanze, one of the protest organisers in Abuja repeatedly stated “children are dying,
women are dying, enough is enough”

The hashtags are gaining more presence on social media and the legislative society is being
probed continuously to ensure that the voices of victims and non-victims of rape and sexual
harassment are being heard. According to Aljazeera, Nigeria's most senior policeman has
ordered the immediate deployment of additional investigators to specialist gender violence
desks, a police statement said on Tuesday.
The police officers charged with the use of violence against an innocent citizen, Tina
Ezekwe, are currently being investigated and are facing disciplinary actions and a possible
prosecution. From social media to the streets, the fight against rape and sexual harassment is
