Gone are days when hair grooming was seen as just an addition to a woman's beauty routine.
Statistics reveal that a woman spends 10 days in a year making sure that her hair looks perfect. Do you know that artists are spending as much time as you? no they are not looking in mirrors trying to achieve the perfect bun or cut.
Well, maybe they are but they have and are still doing more with hair and it's not just art or features in high fashion editorials. Hair has now become a major tool for activism as artists leads the pack in proving that you can do more with hair such as telling a story or fighting a social cause.
Hairstyling is an integral part of Fashion and a form of expressionism; it tells a story.
For so many years, hairstylists have gone far and beyond in breaking the boundaries of hairstyling processes, like the popular saying goes, ‘there are several ways to skin a cat’.
This goes further than what is seen on the runway or mere twists and braids,
but what is known as conceptual works of art.
With hairstyling, there are no rules, but there is 100% tolerance for creativity. Talented Ivorian artist Laetitia Ky, is one artist whose hair sculptures scream avant-garde and activism.
Her whimsical hair arts make bold political statements and address issues
pertaining to gender inequality, sexual harassment and violence. Such social impact of art cannot be undermined.
If you are talented at hairstyling and you’re still contemplating on whether or not to express your art, then think no further and monetize your skill, because just as your hair strands have different features, no two hairstylists are the same.
You are the connoisseur of your art, so own it, express it,
and like Nike, get that cheque and JUST DO IT!
